Hendrik Hulk, from the famous 19th century painting family, learned the trade from his father Abraham Hulk. He became a marine painter, but also made a name for himself as a landscape painter. He lived most of his life in Haarlem and the surrounding area. There he painted ships on the Spaarne, beach views and Zuiderzee views in an impressionist style, related to that of the Hague School. In the 1990s he was at the height of his fame and sold a lot abroad.
