Hendrik Lofvers, like his brothers Otto and Sicco, learned to paint from his father Peter Lofvers, who was a marine painter, sculptor and woodcarver. Hendrik followed in his father's footsteps and painted sea and river views with ships. He also made other landscapes (many Drenthe), flower still lifes and a few portraits, including a self-portrait.
