Herman Johannes Ansingh was a painter of the northern Veluwe region. Born and raised in Nijmegen, he completed his training at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam before moving to Harderwijk in 1912. His main subject was old neighbourhoods in Zuider Zee towns such as Harderwijk and Elburg. His interest lay in painting not large-scale scenes and stirring narratives, but in details and in the everyday charm of quaint streets, canals, boats bobbing in a harbour, squares and farms, giving his pictures their characteristic appeal. In 1931 Ansingh left Harderwijk, only to return in 1955. He also painted still-lifes and landscapes.
