Isaac Ouwater was born in Amsterdam, the city where he also died in 1793. His highly detailed cityscapes bathed in bright light were very popular in his time. The painter continues the tradition of his 17th-century Dutch predecessors such as Gerrit Berckheyde and Jan van der Heyden. Much of Ouwater's work is topographically accurate and shows the buildings of Utrecht, Haarlem, The Hague, Hoorn and especially Amsterdam.
