The painter J.A. Hesterman was born in Amsterdam in 1877 and continued to live in this city for the rest of his life. He painted flower still lifes, cityscapes and landscapes in and around his hometown in an impressionistic style. He also found inspiration in the Vecht region, near Haarlem, in the lake area above Leiden and in the old fishing villages around the IJsselmeer. Hesterman made several study trips in Germany and France.
