The Dutch impressionist Jacob Hendrik Geerlings was educated at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam under August Allebé. He painted landscapes with horses and figures, but became especially known as a painter of horse artillery hussars and Yellow Riders on the heath. Geerlings moved several times, but lived on the Veluwezoom in Rheden and Arnhem for a longer period of time. He probably also got inspiration for many of his landscapes there. A few portraits and intimate, atmospheric interiors of the painter are also known.
