James BarengerLonden 1780-na 1831 Londen

biography of James Barenger

Londoner James Barenger began as a landscape painter, but only became well-known when he specialised in painting horses, dogs and hunting scenes in the tradition of the 18th-century George Stubbs. Stubbs met the need of horse owners to show off their noble four-legged friends and have them captured on canvas. Barenger therefore mainly received his commissions from the upper classes. From 1807 and in the years that followed until 1831, he took part in an exhibition at the Royal Academy in London almost every two years. His paintings were used for engravings in sporting magazines such as W. H. Scott's British Field Sports and The Annals of Sporting. In addition to painting animals, he also enjoyed interacting with them and was a breeder of the Pointer breed of dog.
