biography of Jean Houben

The Limburg sculptor Jean Houben was inspired by man and nature for his sculptures: he depicted subjects such as male and female nudes, animals and blossoms in bronze, stone and wood. His style varied from figurative to organic abstract, influenced by the images of the English artist Henri Moore. He was educated at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and was taught by Wim Rijvers, Fred Carasso and Arthur Spronken, among others. Houben did not limit himself to sculptures: he also made mosaics, reliefs, medals and plaques.
