biography of Johan Nicolaas Coenraad 'Joan' Collette

Joan Collette was born in Delft and followed an artistic education in 1911 and 1912 at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. As a young painter, he had ample opportunity to become acquainted with the colourful luminism of Piet Mondriaan and Jan Sluijters, which could be seen at the exhibitions of De Moderne Kunstkring and De Onafhankelijken. He was also taught by Jan Toorop. He regularly applied broad, short strokes of paint in those years, so that he was counted among the luminists. In later years, the artist specialized in ecclesiastical monumental art, particularly in the making of stained glass and murals in Catholic churches. In the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft he worked with Willem van Konijnenburg on the famous glass windows. He also designed posters.
