Johannes Christiaan d'Arnaud Gerkens was born in The Hague, where he studied at the academy with the portraitist Lodewijk Anthony Vintcent. Later he would become a drawing teacher at the HBS in Delft. His pupils include Barbara Elisabeth van Houten, Willem van Konijnenburg and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten. D'Arnaud Gerkens mainly draws and etches genre pieces, historical representations and figures: mostly portraits and young women in interiors and exteriors. Already in the 40s and 50s of the 19th century his drawings were included in the exhibitions of Living Masters in The Hague. He was a (board) member of the Pulchri studio. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has drawings and etchings by him.
