biography of Johannes Dona

Johannes Dona, who died young, was only 29 years old. He lived and worked in The Hague, where he took painting lessons with Andreas Schelfhout. In the years 1853 and 1858-59 he stayed temporarily in Elburg, and he also visited Doornspijk (1854) and Het Loo (1856). Dona's small oeuvre consists mainly of paintings and watercolors of landscapes with cattle. He also has known views of Elburg, The Hague, Overschie and Dongen. In the 1950s he regularly exhibited his work at the Exhibitions of Living Masters, the most important national art exhibitions of his time. His paintings could be seen in Amsterdam, The Hague and Groningen, among other places. Work by Johannes Dona is in the municipal archives of Haarlem.
