biography of Johannes Engel Masurel

The Amsterdam native Johannes Masurel painted portraits, genre pieces and especially fruit and vegetable still lifes. He was educated at the academy in his native town from 1841 to 1848 and was also privately taught by one of the teachers, Jacobus Schoemaker Doyer. For a long time, Masurel shared a studio along with his colleague and friend J.E. Ebersbach. Masurel was a member of Arti et Amicitiae. Between 1847 and 1903 he submitted work several times for the annual Exhibition of Living Masters. The Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague own work by Masurel.
