biography of Josef Schultz

In the 1920s, the Düsseldorf artist Josef Schultz painted Rhine views, landscapes and river views with ships in a coarse pointille. The luministic summer landscapes from this period are striking, in which he also uses flowing lines to demarcate brightly coloured light and shadow areas. From the 1930s, Schultz traveled through Europe and visited Italy, the Balkans, Africa and the Far East, among other places. This is reflected in his subjects (harbours, North African village views, exotic landscapes and interiors) as well as in a completely different painting style that borders on realism.
