The Flemish expressionist Karel Jan van den Heuvel painted interiors, still lifes, landscapes and river views. His brushstroke is pure and touching, his colors are full of emotion. 'He plays with colours, especially in his landscapes: shimmering yellows in harvest scenes and pinks, friendly village scenes, reds flare up elsewhere and fresh greens', according to critics. He omits details. He cares about the impression the subject makes on him. The painter received his training at the academy of Antwerp with Isidoor Opsomer. Later he also became a teacher there.
