biography of Maurice Louis Tête

Maurice Tête was born in Paris in 1880 and was educated at the renowned École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in the capital. In 1901 he moved to Roanne, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. Although major stylistic changes took place in painting in these years, he continued to paint figuratively, in a style all his own. Initially, Tête's work shows the influence of Maurice Denis and Fauvism in terms of its use of colour and subject matter. Themes such as bathers, women reading and domestic activities often recur, sometimes in series. From 1930 onwards he worked mainly on paper, gouaches, watercolours and pastel drawings. In addition, he paints large-format canvases in a strongly cubist style in a colourful, soft palette. Tête participated in the exhibitions of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris and also exhibited in Lyon and Roanne.
