Pieter van Loon, born in 1801 as a descendant of a noble family, grew up in Amsterdam. The residence of this regent family can still be visited as the Museum Van Loon. The first exhibition in the museum, during its opening in 1973, was devoted to the work of Pieter van Loon. He received a thorough education in Delft and worked for a short time as an engineer at the Provincial Water Management. Nevertheless, he gave in to his passion for drawing and painting. He traveled through Europe with his sketchbook under his arm, drawing what he saw, with a preference for figures, cityscapes and everyday scenes. Museum van Loon describes him as an 'all-artist', but with keen observation skills.
