Remigius Haanen came from a famous family of artists. His father, Casparis Haanen, sisters and brother were all well-known painters. Elizabeth and Gilles Haanen specialised in scenes of sun- and candlelit interiors, while his sister Adriana became an outstanding still life painter. Taught by Jan van Ravenswaay, Remigius continued to work in his teacher's meticulous, romantic style, painting finely detailed romantic summer and winter landscapes.
