biography of Richard David Shepherd

Richard David Shepherd was a painter and writer. He wanted to become a gamekeeper, but decided to devote himself to painting. In the period 1950-1953 he took painting lessons with Robin Goodwin. From 1960 he paints African wild animals. Concerned with the fate of the fauna on this continent, in 1973 he donated the proceeds of one of his paintings to 'Operation Tiger' and in 1984 he founded 'The David Shepherd Conservation Foundation'. David Shepherd is also known for his portraits, including of the British Queen Elizabeth (1969). He received commissions for paintings with military subjects from the British Royal Navy and Air Force. One of the films about his work is the BBC documentary 'The Man Who Loves Giants' (1971). The autobiography of the same name was published in 1975. He has also written several books, including 'Artist in Africa' (1967). Exhibitions in London, Johannesburg and New York, among others.
