Samuel 'Sam' Le Poole studied nature closely during his travels to France, Italy and New Zealand, among others. With a loose, impressionistic and colourful touch, Le Poole paints and watercolours his environment and natural creatures such as mushrooms, flowers and shells. He also produced many still lifes and portraits. He followed his education in Amsterdam, but from 1953 Le Poole settled in Deventer where he taught at the Rijks HBS.
