biography of Simon van den Berg

As a farmer's son, Simon van den Berg started a painting career relatively late. Only after a two-year apprenticeship with the famous P.G. van Os he developed in the forties of the 19th century into one of the most important painters of Dutch Romanticism. Sometimes he also decorated landscapes of contemporaries. In 1854 the particularly versatile painter was appointed director of the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
