biography of Susan Watkins

Susan Watkins belonged to the first generation of female artists in the United States who were free to choose their own education and career. She was born in 1875 in California and trained as a painter in New York. In 1899 she continued her studies in Paris, at the time the epicenter of modern painting. By the time Susan Watkins returned to New York in 1910, she had made a name for herself both in Europe and in the United States as a gifted portraitist and landscape painter. Her elegant genre paintings were also famous, for which the life of the well-to-do circles, in which she herself lived, was the source of inspiration.
