Little is known about the life and work of Willem Simon Petrus van der Vijver. Until 1850 he worked mainly in Rotterdam, after which he spent several years in Kleve, near Nijmegen, Germany. Van der Vijver's oeuvre includes wooded and mountainous landscapes and winter scenes in which the influence of B.C. Koekkoek clearly resonates.
