The painter Anna Maria van Veeren lived and worked all her life in Loenen aan de Vecht. Like so many gifted female painters of her generation, she devoted herself to making flower still lifes. In accordance with artistic conventions around 1840, these were still lifes of flowers or fruits, placed on a marble plinth. Anna van Veeren excelled in depicting the texture of fruits. She was a student of W. Hekking and H.G. ten Cate and from 1845 was a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam.
