Born in 1877 in Toulouse, France, Cyprien Boulet represents a group of French figure and portrait painters who were very successful around the turn of the century. Both in oil and pastel, the painter proves to be a master in capturing the mood and attitude of his models, who, especially when it comes to women, exude a refined and simple elegance. 'I want to make the character, soul and temperament of my model visible', Boulet once said. 'I did it every now and then, although I can't say how'. Famous in his time, the painter was forgotten after 1930, but the latter interest in his work is growing.
