What is more impressive in the photo that artist Daan van Golden made in 1979: how small is the child or how big is the tree? The girl is his daughter Diana, one year old at the time. The tree is the Thick tree of Verwolde in Laren, Gelderland, more than 400 years old and a circumference of almost 8 meters. It is one of those representations in art that needs no further explanation; you see the primal force of nature at work here, in both the vitality of the mobile child and of the monumental motionless tree. That tree is still there and Diana is now a grown woman. Van Golden, who died in 2017 at the age of 81, dedicated the book 'Youth is an Art' in 1997 to his daughter's growing up with a series of photos, of which this is perhaps the best known.
