Verboeckhoven was one of the most acclaimed Belgian animal painters. While he also painted landscapes and portraits, his most popular works were his detailed pastoral scenes with cattle in which he carried on the tradition of the 17th century animal painter Paulus Potter. Verboeckhoven travelled a great deal to countries like Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland and England, where his work was also successfully exhibited. He had very many pupils and was often asked by fellow artists to staffage their paintings with livestock.
