Fritz Paul Zimmer was a versatile artist, sculptor, architect and designer. Born in Germany in 1895, he took drawing and sculpture lessons at the Stuttgart Art Academy. He then continued his studies at the Württemberg State School for Applied Arts and the Munich Art Academy. He then worked at the State Opera in Stuttgart as a director, costume designer and set designer. As if this wasn't enough, he also studied architecture in Rome, Florence and Ravenna. Together with his wife Hermine Leibel, he moved to the United States in 1925, where he taught from 1930 to 1934 as professor of visual and applied arts at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1932, he and his wife became American citizens. During his years in America he also worked as an interior designer and designed many interiors for private individuals, churches and public buildings. Zimmer also left his mark in Germany. In the Grugapark in Essen, where 44 sculptures and works of art are now exhibited, a bronze deer by him was placed as the first work of art in 1927. Zimmer later had a second cast made and placed in the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
