Johannes Siegwald Dahl is considered one of the most pioneering painters of animals in his day. His oeuvre includes landscapes with animals but is dominated by scenes featuring dogs, horses, poultry and birds, along with the odd portrait. He was taught by his father, the Norwegian born painter J.C.C. Dahl, and the animal painter J.F.W. Wegener. He also attended the academy in Dresden from 1843 until 1845. In 1851 he accepted an invitation from Edwin Landseer to travel to England, followed by a visit to Paris. Dahl also travelled to Norway, where he studied the scenery.
