The work of the French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist Henri Lebasque reflects the light, warmth and colors of the South of France. After training at the academy, he became a student in Paris of the figure and history painter Léon Bonnat. In the 1990s he met the neo-impressionists Pissarro, Signac and Seurat, who would have a great influence on his technique and use of color. Lebasque painted regularly in the Vendée, Normandy and Brittany and in the summer months could often be found in Saint-Tropez on the Côte d'Azur, together with Pierre Bonnard, among others. Attracted by the light and landscape of the Mediterranean, he settled permanently in 1924 in the village of Le Cannet. It had a decisive influence on his work, which became lighter in palette and more cheerful in subject matter.
