Jan Kuhr has once been called the 'painter of parties and games', which he probably owes to his lively depictions of circus and theater. In an expressive-impressionist style he painted this artist's world and many other scenes with people in the lead role: everyday scenes, but also portraits and processions. In addition, landscapes, orchards and depictions of the Breton coast are part of his oeuvre. Kuhr was a pupil of the Kunstnijverheidsschool (applied arts school) in Amsterdam, and lived and worked for many years in his hometown Eindhoven, where he taught at the Stichting Kunstzinnige Vorming. He was a member of the artists' associations 'Visual Arts' and 'The Free Expressives'.
