Jan Pieter Veth came from a wealthy, artistic background and received his education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. There he became friends with, among others, Willem Witsen and Maurits van der Valk, with whom he took care of the visual arts section in the magazine of the same name when De Nieuwe Gids was founded. He made a name for himself mainly with his portraits, although he also painted landscapes. He was also an accomplished etcher and lithographer. Between 1888 and 1896 he made numerous portrait lithographs of prominent figures from politics, science and culture for the weekly magazine De Amsterdammer, as well as for De Kroniek. This established his fame as a portraitist, especially in Amsterdam and the surrounding area.
