He mainly painted beach scenes with children playing and scenes from fishing and peasant life. In style and choice of subject he is close to the Hague School, although his color is lighter and brighter. The beach scenes with children are sunny and radiate joy and happiness. He usually painted them in Katwijk, where he spent the summers with his family. His children were often models. The atmosphere of the peasant and fisherman scenes is very different, in which he expresses the harsh existence of this population group by using subdued colors.
