'Midinettes’ was the nickname given in the Parisian Belle Époque to the group of young girls who worked for the major Parisian couture and fashion houses. These girls, who mostly came from the working-class districts of Montmartre and Belville, began their training at the age of 12 or 13. Because these seamstresses, embroiderers and saleswomen could not go home for lunch, they had a small snack (dinette) in a café around noon (midi) or ate their home-cooked lunch in one of the Parisian parks. These young women, who were usually of modest origin, were often elegantly dressed and well-informed about the latest fashion.
