Born in Amsterdam, in 1912 Johan Meijer settled in the Gooi region, first in Laren and later taking up residence in a house called Le Paradou in Blaricum. He often painted outdoors, his favourite subjects being landscapes with trees, which show exceptional colouristic quality. Scenes of summer he always signed in red, those of winter in blue. Meijer studied painting at the academy in Amsterdam and later under A.M. Gorter. While on a study trip to Paris he encountered the work of the Neo-Impressionists, which made a lasting impression on his own work.
