Before Johannes Karel Leurs settled in Rijswijk in 1903, he worked as a designer at the 'Rozenburg' pottery factory in Loosduinen and at the Fayence and Tile Factory Holland. After 1905, the painter mainly lived and worked in The Hague. During his 'Hague years' he received advice from the well-known Hague School painter Willem Maris and is influenced by his work. With a modest palette he painted landscapes with cattle and windmills under a moving cloudy sky. For unknown reasons, the painter left for Indonesia in April 1935, where he died three years later.
