Johannes Pieter van Wisselingh, born in 1812, had already built up a certain reputation as a painter in the area of Rhenen when he was apprenticed to Schelfhout in 1840. Around 1844 he exchanged The Hague for Renkum and then he left for Utrecht in 1848 for good. Van Wisselingh's oeuvre consists, besides forest and heather views, largely of panoramic summer landscapes that he combined with a preference for topographical details. His views on Haarlem, Voorburg, Heelsum, Arnhem and Amersfoort are known. In terms of composition, they are strongly related to the panoramic landscapes of Schelfhout.
