Jozef Neuhuys is best known as a painter of landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes and peasant interiors, a genre that became very popular in our country especially after 1880. He was educated at the Drawing Academy in Antwerp and was a pupil of his brother, the Larense School painter Albert Neuhuys. He lived and worked in Antwerp, Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. The sight of his hometown and its rural surroundings always inspired him to paint impressionistic city and nature scenes.
