'Hartjesdag' (Heart's Day)is a colorful, centuries-old neighborhood festival on Amsterdam's Zeedijk, held annually on the third Monday of August. On this day, men dress as women and women as men—a tradition that originated in poverty but has evolved into a joyful ritual. The children—painted in the typical angular Maks style—promenade, sing, and celebrate.
