Homeward bound in the dunes, Katwijk

Louis Hartz started his education at the academy in Amsterdam at such a young age that he was not allowed access to the nude study class. But his talent trumped the conventions. During his study years, and also afterwards, he often worked in the studio of his gifted cousin Isaac Meyer de Haan and devoted himself mainly to portraits and landscapes. Between 1900 and 1910 he bought a summer house in Katwijk, where he painted the fisherman's life. Hartz is distinguished by his colorful palette and preference for portraying the work and life of the fishermen's wives. Unfortunately, much of this Katwijk work was lost due to a fire. His paintings were bought early on by the then famous physician collector J.F.S Esser.
