Piet Schipperus was initially going to be an art dealer, but he could make his profession from painting thanks to a royal subsidy. He started with romantic landscapes, sea and river views, mostly in the surroundings of Haarlem and in Limburg. In 1910 he settled in The Hague, after which he found his subjects in and around Rotterdam. Schipperus was also a handsome watercolorist and lithographer. For twelve years he accompanied Jacobus Craandijk, who traveled through the Netherlands and described everything he saw. Schipperus made the images with his publications 'Walks through the Netherlands' (1875-1888).
