A painting lover congratulated me on the well-intentioned compliment that “this winter is just as beautiful as a Louis Apol“, I thought: he should take a different look at this. He may have meant Willem Witsen. If you love Witsen, you also love this tranquil winter, first seen and sketched somewhere in Holland. If we had no fewer than 10 works by Witsen, including three Edese scenes, we had only one work by Philip Zilcken over the years. And now a winter, how simplicity can have such true beauty. A lot of meaning is hidden in it. It called for the writing of a verse, which can now also be found on the site of poet Coby Poelman. From her I always get, with many thanks, some tips by post how I can seal it better.
Kraaienpoten, vossensporen
prenten in de sneeuw,
een aftands hekje lijkt verloren,
dromend over een vorige eeuw.
Markante oude poldermolen,
opmaat naar een stil gehucht
waar eenvoud leeft, verscholen
onder een rafelig lint avondlucht.
