biography of 'Agatha' Wilhelmina Zethraeus

The Swedish-Dutch Agatha Zethraeus is best known as a student of Piet Mondrian. It is said that they had an affair, but this is by no means certain. The painter showed talent at an early age and was educated at the 'Dagtekenschool' for girls in Amsterdam. She supplemented this with lessons from artists. In Renkum (ca. 1905), Cornelis Kuypers taught her to paint landscapes 'plein air' and Piet van Wijngaerdt taught still life painting. But her heart went out to cityscapes, which he painted in Amsterdam and exhibited at 'De Onafhankelijken' and 'Sint Lucas'.
