Little is known about the life of Agnes Gardner King. She belonged to the group of English, German and American painters who came to our country from around 1880 to paint here. In Holland they found a treasure trove of picturesque subjects on a small number of square kilometers: the fisherman's life on the beach in Katwijk, the peculiar fishing customs and colourful costumes in Volendam, Marken and Urk, and the flower fields around Haarlem and Egmond. Painters such as George Hitchcock often provided their images with a young woman in regional costume, sitting or standing in a field of flowers. Some of them even had a collection of special suits and hats, which they combined at will. Agnes Gardner King also painted in the Egmond area. She may have collaborated with Hitchcock, because her watercolour 'In the tulip field' closely resembles a painting by this master with the same subject.
