The Belgian painter Alphonse van Beurden inherited the artistic talent from his father, Alphonse Sr., who made a name for himself as a sculptor. However, the young Alphonse went his own way and opted for painting. His oeuvre is thematically diverse; he painted figure pieces, landscapes, forest views, interior scenes, flowers, Scheldt views, still lifes and decorative panels. Alphonse Jr. was educated at the academy of Antwerp, to which he would later also be associated as a teacher. In style he was influenced by Impressionism; his own signature shows itself in a characteristic bright and full use of colour and a large, firm touch. Museums in Antwerp and Sint-Niklaas own this artist's work.
