Andries Vermeulen, contemporary of Andries Schelfhout, was born in Dordrecht in 1763 as the son of the landscape painter Cornelis Vermeulen. He received his first painting lessons from his father. He specialized in summer landscapes and also in crowded ice scenes that betray the influence of his 17th-century predecessor Hendrick Averkamp. Following in the footsteps of his father, he also made copies of work by old masters, including Albert Cuyp.
