Until now, not much is known about the life and work of Ans Lussenburg. Partly because of this work, we know that she painted flower still lifes in a lively and colourful style. She may have been trained at an academy, or had lessons from painters, but it could also be that she taught herself to paint. The palette and brushwork used here certainly show influences from early 20th-century expressionism.
