Antoinette Steffelaar taught herself how to paint. According to a descendant, she could be found behind her easel 'every Sunday morning' for more than 70 years. The interior and garden of her home in The Hague were the main subjects for her work. The artist married the deputy director of the Municipal gas factory in The Hague, a descendant of the painter Nicolaas Steffelaar.
