biography of Antoon Markus

Although he joined the artists' association Artibus Sacrum in his hometown of Arnhem, Antoon Markus was a loner, wandering through the Netherlands, France and Belgium until he settled in 1924 at the Veluwezoom in Wolfheze. His work is closely related to that of the French Barbizon painters, whom he greatly admired. He is best known for his many forest landscapes and river views with low horizons and beautifully constructed skies. In his Veluwe period, the varied landscape around Oosterbeek and the village itself were his main source of inspiration. Many still existing places and farms can be pointed out in his work, although knowledge about them has often been lost.
