biography of 'Arend' Willem Maurits Odé

The sculptor Arend Odé was the son of a publisher from Schiedam. He received a thorough and conservative education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and The Hague. At the academy in The Hague he was taught by the Belgian sculptor Eugène Lacomblé and was a fellow student of Charles van Wijk. He was also taught by the sculptor Charles van der Stappen at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. After his education he lived and worked for some time in The Hague, which was the leading city in the Dutch art world in the second half of the 19th century. He was briefly a teacher at the Hague Academy and from 1905 professor of modeling and sculpture at the Technical University of Delft. Around that time he married Anna Maris, daughter of the famous painter Jacob Maris. Odé was especially known for his portrait commissions and his decorations on the Peace Palace in The Hague (front facade) and the City Hall in Rotterdam.
