Arentina Hendrica Arendsen, who was born and raised in Amsterdam, lived and worked from 1851 in the city of Haarlem. There she specialized in painting richly elaborated and realistic still lifes with flowers and fruits. Arentina received her training from the well-known romantic landscape painter Cornelis Lieste. He was known as a skilled pedagogue and opened his studio to many artists, such as J. Reekers, H.D. Kruseman van Elten, H. van de Sande Bakhuyzen and P.J.C. Gabriel. The influence of Arentina's teacher is clearly discernible in the harmony and beautiful lighting of her bouquets.
